NT Scan at AV Scan Diagnostics, Dadar West

The NT scan (Nuchal Translucency scan) is one of the most important scans of early pregnancy — a time-sensitive screening test for chromosomal conditions including Down syndrome. At AV Scan, all NT scans are performed to FMF (UK) protocol — the international gold standard — on the GE Voluson E10, the world's most advanced obstetric ultrasound system.

Both Dr. Avinash Bansal and Dr. Vaishnavi Bansal hold FMF (UK) certification for NT scanning — one of the most rigorous international credentials in fetal medicine. Only FMF-certified practitioners can perform and report NT scans to this standard.

Important: The NT scan must be performed between 11 weeks 2 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. This window is strict — book your appointment early to ensure you don't miss it.

What Does the NT Scan Measure?

The NT scan measures the fluid at the back of the baby's neck (nuchal translucency). When combined with maternal blood tests (PAPP-A and free beta-hCG), it calculates individual risk for:

  • Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) — the most common chromosomal condition
  • Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)
  • Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)

What Else Is Assessed at the NT Scan?

  • Nasal bone — absence increases Down syndrome risk
  • Fetal heart rate
  • Ductus venosus blood flow
  • Tricuspid regurgitation
  • Accurate gestational age and due date (CRL measurement)
  • Number of fetuses (twins, triplets)
  • Early structural assessment of fetal anatomy
  • Uterus, ovaries and cervical length

How to Prepare for Your NT Scan

  • Book your appointment early — the window is strictly 11w2d to 13w6d
  • Have a moderately full bladder (drink 2–3 glasses of water 30 minutes before)
  • Bring your antenatal blood test results if available
  • Bring your first trimester ultrasound report (if done elsewhere)
  • Scan duration: approximately 30–45 minutes

First Trimester Combined Screening

For the most accurate Down syndrome risk assessment, the NT scan is combined with a first trimester blood test (PAPP-A and free beta-hCG). At AV Scan, we can help coordinate this combined screening through our NABL accredited laboratory partners. Ask us about this when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

The NT scan must be done between 11 weeks 2 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy — this window is strict. We recommend booking as soon as you have your dating scan. Call or WhatsApp us at +91 98200 51511.
An increased NT measurement does not mean your baby definitely has a chromosomal condition — it increases the risk that needs further evaluation. Dr. Avinash or Dr. Vaishnavi Bansal will explain your results clearly and advise on next steps including referral for genetic counselling or invasive testing if appropriate.
No. The NT scan is a standard abdominal ultrasound — non-invasive and completely painless. In some cases, a transvaginal scan may be needed if the abdominal view is not optimal.
A moderately full bladder helps with the abdominal view in early pregnancy. Drink 2–3 glasses of water about 30 minutes before your appointment.
The FMF (Fetal Medicine Foundation, UK) protocol is the internationally recognised gold standard for NT scanning. It includes strict criteria for image quality, measurement technique and equipment certification. Both our radiologists — Dr. Avinash Bansal and Dr. Vaishnavi Bansal — hold current FMF (UK) certification.
