The centre is not an emergency service. Go to a hospital emergency department first, and have the scan afterwards if it is still advised, if you have: sudden severe abdominal or pelvic pain; heavy bleeding in pregnancy; one-sided lower abdominal pain with fainting or shoulder-tip pain in early pregnancy; sudden severe pain in a testicle; or a swollen leg with breathlessness or chest pain. If your baby is moving less than usual in later pregnancy, contact your obstetrician or maternity unit the same day, without waiting for a booked scan.

Each type of ultrasound has its own page explaining what it shows, how to prepare and what the report means. If your prescription just says "USG" or "sonography", send a photo on WhatsApp and our team will check which scan is meant.
Abdominal ultrasound: liver (including fatty liver), gallbladder and gallstones, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and bladder; often the first test for abdominal pain or abnormal liver or kidney blood tests. For stones, see also which scan for kidney stones.
Pelvic and transvaginal (TVS) ultrasound: the uterus and its lining, fibroids, ovarian cysts and PCOS features, through the lower abdomen or with a slim transvaginal probe, only with your consent.
Thyroid and neck ultrasound: goitre, nodules described with ACR TI-RADS, neck lymph nodes and salivary glands.
MSK ultrasound: shoulder, tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints, scanned while you move the joint where needed; musculoskeletal imaging is led by our MSK fellowship-trained radiologist.
Liver elastography: measures liver stiffness to help estimate scarring (fibrosis), with no needle, usually alongside an abdominal ultrasound in the same visit. Inflammation, a recent meal or a congested liver can also raise the reading, so it is interpreted together with your blood tests.
Ultrasound-guided FNAC and biopsy: thyroid nodules, lymph nodes, breast lumps and lumps under the skin. A same-day ultrasound-guided biopsy is possible when your doctor advises it, and the result comes from the pathology laboratory.
Follicle study: a series of short transvaginal scans across one cycle to track how egg follicles grow and look for signs that ovulation has happened.
Sono-HSG (SSG) with HyCoSy: shows the uterine cavity and whether fluid passes through the fallopian tubes, using ultrasound only with no X-rays; performed by a woman radiologist. A tube can sometimes look blocked because of a brief muscle spasm, so your gynaecologist interprets the result with your other tests.

How to prepare for an ultrasound, and how long it takes
Preparation depends on the part of the body being scanned. As a general guide:
Abdomen (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys): usually about 4–6 hours without food; plain water is fine. If you have diabetes, especially if you take insulin or diabetes tablets, tell us when you book so the fasting can be planned and low blood sugar avoided.
Kidney (renal) and other abdominal Doppler: usually about 4–6 hours without food, as for an abdominal scan, to reduce bowel gas.
Pelvis through the abdomen (uterus and ovaries in women; bladder and prostate in men): a full bladder, so drink water beforehand and do not pass urine until after the scan; our team tells you how much to drink and when. If you have been told to limit fluids, ask us first.
Abdomen and pelvis together: both of the above.
Transvaginal scan (TVS) and follicle study: an empty bladder. If a scan through the abdomen and a TVS are both planned, you come with a full bladder and empty it partway through.
Early pregnancy and NT scans: a comfortably full bladder usually helps; in very early pregnancy a transvaginal scan may be needed, with an empty bladder and only with your consent. Later pregnancy scans, such as growth scans, usually need no fasting and no full bladder.
Thyroid, neck, breast, MSK, scrotal and leg Doppler scans: usually no preparation; eat and take your medicines as usual.
Liver elastography: usually about 4–6 hours without food, as for an abdominal scan.
FNAC or biopsy: tell us in advance about any blood thinner, but do not stop it on your own; the doctor who prescribed it decides. Some deeper procedures need a few hours without food or a recent clotting test, and our team tells you if so.
Sono-HSG: usually around day 6–11 of the cycle, after your period has fully stopped and before ovulation; the day is confirmed when you book. Tell us if there is any chance you could be pregnant, or if you have fever, unusual discharge or pelvic pain, because the test may need to be moved.
Wear a two-piece outfit, and bring your prescription and any earlier scan reports and images, because comparing with a previous scan often answers the key question. A scan of one area usually takes about 15–30 minutes on the couch.
