Why your doctor may ask for a DEXA scan

DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, also written DXA) is the test doctors use to diagnose osteoporosis and to follow its treatment. The same scan can also measure how much of your body is fat and how much is muscle. Your doctor's question decides which of the two you need, or both.

Bone density

Women after menopause, when their doctor advises a check of bone strength
Men and women over 50 with risk factors for a fracture
Long-term steroid tablets, or other medicines that can thin the bones
Checking whether osteoporosis treatment is working

How a DEXA scan is done at AV Scan

On the table
You lie on your back on an open, padded table. Nothing closes around you, and the scan does not hurt.
The scanner arm
An arm above the table passes slowly over you while you keep still. It uses very low-dose X-rays at two different energies, which lets the software tell bone, fat and lean tissue apart.
Bone density sites
For bone density, the lower spine and the hips are measured, and the forearm as well when it is needed. [2]
Body composition
For body composition, the arm passes over your whole body, so the results can be split into the arms, the legs and the trunk.

Before your DEXA scan

Eat and drink as usual: there is no fasting and no injection.
You may be asked not to take calcium tablets for one day before the scan. [1]
Wear clothes without metal zips, buttons or hooks.
Tell us if you are or could be pregnant.
Tell us if you have recently had a barium test, a scan with an injected dye or a nuclear medicine scan, as these can affect the reading. [1]
Bring your earlier DEXA report, if you have one, so the new numbers can be compared with it.

What your DEXA report contains

Bone mineral density (BMD): Given for each site scanned: the lower spine, the hips, and the forearm when it is included.
T-score: Your bone density compared with that of a healthy young adult; your doctor interprets it. [1]
Body composition, when asked for: Total and regional fat mass and fat percentage, lean (muscle) mass for the arms, legs and trunk, visceral fat, and appendicular lean mass.

Most reports the same day, sent to your WhatsApp. The numbers are one part of the picture: your own doctor reads them together with your age, your history and your other risk factors before deciding on treatment.

DEXA body composition: body fat and muscle

Body composition is measured on the same Fujifilm FDx Visionary DR. Unlike BMI, which works from height and weight alone, DEXA measures fat and lean tissue separately, region by region.

Total body fat and fat percentage
Where the fat sits: the trunk, the arms and the legs
Visceral fat: the fat stored deep in the abdomen, around the organs
Lean (muscle) mass for each arm and leg and for the trunk
Appendicular lean mass: the muscle in the arms and legs, which doctors use when they assess sarcopenia

Because the scan separates fat from muscle, it helps when weight is changing quickly, for example on GLP-1 medicines, to see what has actually been lost. A scan before treatment and repeat scans during it show the change over time.

Is a DEXA scan the same as a bone density or BMD test?

Yes. DEXA, also written DXA, is the scan that measures bone mineral density (BMD), so a prescription may say BMD, bone densitometry or DXA. Here it is done on the Fujifilm FDx Visionary DR.

Can a DEXA scan measure body fat?

Yes. A whole-body DEXA measures fat mass and fat percentage, lean (muscle) mass and visceral fat, for the whole body and for each region. It is quoted separately from bone density, so tell us which one you need.

Where can I get a full body DEXA scan near Dadar?

How much radiation is there in a DEXA scan?

Very little. DEXA uses a very low dose of X-rays, less than a standard chest X-ray. [3] As with any X-ray test, tell us beforehand if you are or could be pregnant.

Do men need a bone density test too?
