Our GE Voluson E10 is an ultrasound system designed for pregnancy and fetal medicine scanning, with 3D/4D imaging and detailed Doppler. All scans are personally performed and reported by our FMF (UK) and ISUOG certified radiologists.
We follow ISUOG (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology) and FMF (Fetal Medicine Foundation, UK) protocols for all obstetric examinations — so that every pregnancy scan is measured and reported in the same internationally standardised way.
Bleeding, Pain or Reduced Baby Movements? Go to Hospital First
A pregnancy scan is a planned test, not emergency care. If you have any of the following, do not wait for a scan appointment. Go straight to the labour room of your hospital or to a hospital emergency department, and let your obstetrician know.

How Long Each Pregnancy Scan Takes and What to Bring
At AV Scan Diagnostics in Dadar West, Mumbai, pregnancy scans are performed and reported by our radiologists. Both are MD (Radiology) and FMF (UK) certified, and one of them has particular expertise in fetal medicine and all kinds of Doppler. At the end of the scan, the radiologist explains the main findings to you. Your obstetrician then decides the plan.
Early pregnancy (viability and dating) scan: usually about 15-30 minutes. A comfortably full bladder usually helps.
NT scan: usually about 30-45 minutes. A moderately full bladder can help with the view through the tummy. Sometimes the baby needs time to move into the right position for the measurement.
Anomaly (TIFFA) scan: usually about 45-60 minutes, and longer if the baby's position hides some views. A full bladder is usually not needed.
Fetal echo: usually about 30-45 minutes. It can sometimes be done in the same visit as your anomaly scan. Our team will tell you when you book.
Growth scan with Doppler: usually about 20-30 minutes. You do not need to fast or have a full bladder.
You do not need to fast for any pregnancy ultrasound. Most scans are done through the tummy. In early pregnancy, an internal (transvaginal) scan is sometimes needed for a clearer view. It is done only with your consent, and you will be asked to empty your bladder before it. Please bring:

What is the NT Scan?
The NT (Nuchal Translucency) scan is performed between 11 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. It measures the fluid at the back of the baby's neck (nuchal translucency) and — when combined with blood tests — calculates the risk of chromosomal conditions including Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13).
AV Scan follows the FMF (UK) protocol for NT scanning, the method developed by the Fetal Medicine Foundation and used internationally for first-trimester screening. Both our radiologists hold FMF (UK) certification for NT scanning.
What is the Anomaly Scan (TIFFA)?
The anomaly scan (also called TIFFA — Targeted Imaging For Fetal Anomalies) is typically performed between 18–22 weeks. It is a detailed survey of the baby's anatomy — checking the brain, spine, heart, kidneys, abdominal wall, face, limbs and more. It also assesses the placenta position, amniotic fluid levels and cervical length.
What Do Growth Scans, Fetal Echo and Fetal MRI Check?
A growth scan with Doppler is usually done at about 28-36 weeks. It checks whether the baby is growing as expected and whether the placenta is supporting that growth. The scan measures the baby's head, tummy and thigh bone to estimate the baby's weight, and compares the result with your earlier scans. The estimated weight can differ from the weight at birth, so the trend across scans matters more than any single estimate. The scan also measures the fluid around the baby (liquor), shows where the placenta lies and notes the baby's position. The Doppler part measures blood flow in the umbilical artery, in the baby's middle cerebral artery and, when needed, in the uterine arteries. A fetal echo (fetal echocardiography) is a detailed scan of the baby's heart, usually done at about 18-24 weeks. Your obstetrician may ask for one in situations such as these:
diabetes that was present before pregnancy
the baby's mother, father, brother or sister born with a heart condition
pregnancy through IVF
an increased NT measurement, or a possible heart finding on the anomaly scan
Fetal MRI is not a routine scan. It is a follow-up test done after a detailed ultrasound, not instead of one. Your obstetrician or fetal medicine specialist may ask for it, usually after about 20 weeks, when the ultrasound needs a closer look at the baby's brain, spine, chest or abdomen. Besides measuring the nuchal translucency, it dates the pregnancy from the baby's length and checks the heartbeat.
