Cardiac Tests Available at AV Scan
2D Echocardiography (2D Echo)
A 2D Echo is an ultrasound of the heart — it provides real-time images of the heart's structure and function. It assesses:
- Left and right ventricular size and function (ejection fraction)
- Heart valve assessment — aortic, mitral, tricuspid, pulmonary
- Pericardial effusion (fluid around the heart)
- Wall motion abnormalities (indicating coronary artery disease)
- Congenital heart disease assessment
- Cardiac chambers and septum
2D Echo is recommended for chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, murmurs, hypertension monitoring, pre-operative cardiac assessment and follow-up of known heart disease.
ECG (Electrocardiogram)
A resting ECG records the heart's electrical activity. It detects arrhythmias, heart blocks, ischaemia, previous myocardial infarction and conduction abnormalities. Quick (5 minutes), painless and highly informative.
TMT — Treadmill Stress Test
The TMT (also called Exercise Stress Test or EST) evaluates the heart's response to controlled physical exercise. Performed on our Schiller treadmill, it is used to:
- Detect coronary artery disease (blocked arteries)
- Assess exercise capacity and cardiac fitness
- Evaluate chest pain or breathlessness on exertion
- Guide fitness and cardiac rehabilitation programmes
- Pre-operative cardiac clearance
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
PFT (Spirometry) measures lung capacity and airflow. It is essential for diagnosing asthma, COPD, restrictive lung disease and monitoring response to treatment. Required for TMT baseline assessment in many patients.
What to Expect
- ECG: 5–10 minutes. No preparation required.
- 2D Echo: 30–40 minutes. No preparation required. Wear comfortable clothing.
- TMT: Allow 60–90 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes. Do not eat for 3 hours beforehand. Avoid caffeine on the day of the test. Bring your referring doctor's prescription.
- PFT: 20–30 minutes. Avoid bronchodilator inhalers for 4–6 hours if possible (ask your doctor).
