What changes the cost of an MRI

Safety and special situations
Sedation
Sedation is given by an anaesthesiologist. You will be told how long to fast before it. An adult must come with you and take you home, and you must not drive, ride or operate machinery for the rest of that day.
Pacemakers and implants
We scan only MR-conditional devices; non-conditional or older (legacy) devices are not scanned. Bring your implant card. A pacemaker is switched to MRI mode by the device company's representative, who attends, as arranged with your cardiologist.
Contrast and your medicines
Do not stop or change any medicine unless your doctor tells you to. Tell us about any earlier reaction to contrast, allergies, kidney disease or diabetes medicines, and if you are or may be pregnant. We check kidney function (creatinine can be done at the centre) and the radiologist decides about metformin. About 4 hours without food; water is allowed.
Brain MRI cost: what decides it
- Time in the scanner
- Usually about 30 to 45 minutes.
- Contrast
- Not needed for most plain brain MRIs; added when your doctor's question needs it.
- What adds to the study
- Contrast, or MR angiography or venography to look at the blood vessels (MRA / MR venography (brain)).

Knee MRI cost: what decides it
- Time in the scanner
- Usually about 30 to 40 minutes for one knee.
- Contrast
- Rarely needed for the knee.
- What adds to the study
- Both knees are two regions, so they are quoted as a combination.

Spine MRI cost: what decides it
- Time in the scanner
- Usually about 30 to 40 minutes for the neck and about 30 to 45 minutes for the lower back, or for one region with a whole-spine screening added.

- Not needed for most spine MRIs; no fasting for a scan without contrast.
- What adds to the study
- A second region, or a whole-spine screening of the neck, mid-back and lower back added to a regional scan, is quoted as a combination.

Shoulder MRI cost: what decides it

- Usually about 30 to 40 minutes.

- Not needed for a plain shoulder MRI.

- MR arthrography, when your doctor needs a closer look at the labrum: contrast is injected into the joint just before the scan.

Cardiac MRI cost: what decides it
- Time in the scanner
- Usually about 45 to 60 minutes, with stickers on the chest to follow your heartbeat and many short breath-holds.
- Contrast
- Usually a gadolinium injection; a recent creatinine report may be requested, and the test can be done at the centre.
- Who it is for
- Adults and children, when the heart muscle needs assessing.

MRCP cost: what decides it
- Time in the scanner
- Usually about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Contrast
- Usually not needed; added when the liver or pancreas also needs to be assessed, which makes the scan longer.
- Before the scan
- Usually about 4 to 6 hours without food; water is allowed.

Prostate MRI cost: what decides it

- Often a gadolinium injection into an arm vein; some scans are done without it.

- An endorectal coil is sometimes used. The report gives a PI-RADS v2.1 score with the prostate volume and PSA density.

Is the MRI report charged separately?
No. The report by our radiologist is part of the scan price. The figure we quote covers the scan, the report and delivery of your results on WhatsApp.
Does a contrast MRI cost more than a plain MRI?
Contrast is one of the things that changes the study. Your prescription and our radiologist decide whether it is needed, and the quote tells you whether it is included before you book.
How is a spine MRI with a whole-spine screening quoted?
As a combination. A cervical or lumbar spine MRI with a whole-spine screening added is quoted together, as one figure, from your prescription.
Why is there no MRI price list on this website?
Every MRI is planned by our radiologists for the question on your prescription, so each scan is quoted on its own. Send the prescription on WhatsApp (opens WhatsApp) and you have the exact figure before you book.
Will I get the bills and reports I need for an insurance claim on my MRI?
Yes. For insurance reimbursement, we give you every bill and report your claim needs. Whether your MRI is covered depends on your policy, so check that with your insurer.
Can I book two MRI scans for the same visit?
Often, yes. Send us your prescription and we plan the scans together and confirm the combined figure before you travel.
